Compressing Flash Video... A Cheaper Good Way PDF Print E-mail

The following is my recommendation for my clients (as of Friday May 23rd 2008).

This is not intended to be a general primer on how to compress video. It is simply my current advice for my clients based on their needs.

There are really two good cheap ways:

1. Sign up on YouTube for a YouTube channel (or use a similar free service), put your videos there, and then link to them or embed on your site.

2. Convert video to Flash .flv files and upload.

There are lots of reasonably good cheap or free flv converters for Windows. If you are on a Mac I recommend VisualHub.

a. Go to http://visualhub.net and buy it and download and install on your computer

b. Open VisualHub, drag the file to be converted into the main window, and then make the following settings:

- Select Flash from Top menu bar
- Check "Raw .flv Format"
- Click Advanced... , set size to 400 wide by 300 high, bitrate to 500
- Back to the main window and set the "Save To" path (or use default)
- Click Start

Now wait till it's done. (You can play with the settings of course and even bring the bitrate down if you wish, but the above settings will give you a nice clear video that will stream for about everybody who has a Broadband connection to the net.)
